The Royal Canadian Mint [RCM] has completely outdone themselves for this third year of issue in the highly desirable Incuse Maple Leaf Series. They have spared no expense and challenged their top engineers and employees by plating the 2020 Incuse Proof Maple Leafs in one of the most expensive precious metals on the market - RHODIUM. These carefully plated coins have been dubbed "Black Proof Maple Leafs, " due to the very dark - nearly black - appearance of the Rhodium on the gold and silver coins. The only elements of the design that are not plated in Rhodium is the iconic Maple Leaf and Queen's effigy, which essentially mutes the background of the obverse and reverse of each coin and allows the stunning Incuse design to visually draw you in. In order to achieve the near black effect of these coins, layers of black Rhodium are built up to a precise level in order to achieve just the right color. This was a special challenge for the RCM engineers who had to find a way to apply this Rhodium plating with the same consistency on every coin, while keeping it true to the struck design. It belongs in the Platinum group and nearly all Rhodium comes from South African mines, which has made distribution very difficult due to multiple mining strikes in past years.
